- Part A (1972-1988). South moves to GOP in presidential elections, and GOP wins 4 of 5 races, with 49-state landslides in 1972 and 1984. Democrats dominate downballot until 1994.
- Part B (1992-2024). Democrats win the popular vote in 7 of 9 elections, but decisively only in 2008. Parties trade control of Congress and GOP grows stronger in the states.
